Grantham was twinned with towns in Poland, Germany – and Russia

Vaughan Hardy says…

The Polish town of Przemysl often currently mentioned in the news was twinned with Grantham from 1993-1997 encouraged by councillor Jeff Thompson and John Hurst.

This eastern Polish town was associated for cultural links to include penpal , art, musical groups including choirs and sporting exchanges.

A dance group for participation in the town’s Folk and Food, Drink and Dance festival arrived in 1996. Harry Thomas , the SKDC  Public Relations Officer, whilst on a friendship trip in 1994, was mugged at the train station.

A chance for Grantham guitarists to enter a music festival there was met with a nil response.

Due to lack of public interest the ties were abandoned in December 1999.

GM Adds….

Grantham was twinned with the Russian town of Poltava in 1945. It followed a fall out with the Russian embassy three years earlier when the Hammer & Sickle Flag, flying from the Guildhall was stolen.

Buit the good relations just seemed to fizzle out.

The in 1967 There were plans to link the town with Ludwigshafen, Germany, but this too seemed to fade away.

Instread, Cologne suburb Sankt Augustin begame the chosen twin town, although we haven’t heard much of that post-Brexit.
