Grantham College student James Dexter will be running /walking 457 miles to raise money for the Lord Kitchener’s Memorial Holiday Centre, between October 1st – October 31st this year.
Although the centre is not in Lincolnshire, the 30-year-old is hoping for support from a county with a large military population who benefit from the centre too.
James is coming to the end of a 13 year military career with the Grenadier Guards on the 3rd October having served overseas in Canada, Kenya, Malawi, Tajikistan, Sierra Leone and two tours of Afghanistan.
He said: “The reason for this challenge is due to the recent events happening in Afghanistan I am aware many service, ex-service personnel, their families/friends and the general public as a whole will be affected one way or anotherwhether that be directly or indirectly.
“I hope as a country we can facilitate as much support and help as possible to the Afghan population.
“There is agreat focus there currently. I support that cause greatly, I also want to ensure that our own are cared for at homethroughout this time too.”
The Lord Kitchener’s Memorial Holiday Centre offers discounted breaks / holidays in the UK for service personnel and their families/friends.
You will often find many Chelsea Pensioners, WW2 and commonwealth veterans enjoying a deserved break at the centre.
James wants to provide the centre with vital finances to ensure they canconduct the refurbishments required and continue to provide such an escape for the present and future veteransof the U.K and Commonwealth.
He is running 457 miles to represent the number of lives lost is the recent Afghanmistant conflict.
The total mileage across the duration averages 14.75 miles per day and although this may not seem the most daunting of tasks to some. This will be conducted whilst studying at Grantham College, working and tending to a newborn child.
