The Grantham Southern Relief Road (GSRR) project has been recognised as one of the UK’s top construction sites after receiving a prestigious Gold Award at the 2026 Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) National Site Awards.

The award places the scheme among the upper echelon of construction projects nationally, recognising the exceptionally high standards maintained throughout delivery of the project.

A member of the project’s site team collected the award during the national ceremony held in Manchester in April 2026.

Cllr David East, executive member for highways, said: “Winning a national Gold Award is a tremendous achievement and reflects the consistently high standards being demonstrated on the Grantham Southern Relief Road project.

“To be recognised among the very best construction sites in the country is something everyone involved should be extremely proud of. It shows that the team is not only delivering major infrastructure for Lincolnshire, but doing so in a way that prioritises safety, environmental responsibility, workforce wellbeing and positive engagement with local communities.

“For the county council, it’s incredibly important that our major projects are delivered to the highest possible standards, and awards like this give us real confidence that this is happening.”

Some examples of the work Galliford Try and the Grantham Southern Relief Road project team have carried out to earn the gold award includes:

  • Raising over £7,500 for local charities
  • Creating six new jobs for previously unemployed local people
  • Engaging with over 200 local students at career fairs and workshops
  • Donating £6,000 in time and materials towards local schools and children’s provisions
  • Taking on thirteen work placement students and five apprentices from within the local area
  • Working with Great Ponton Parish Council to provide a new stone access track and pathway for the local amateur football club’s changing facilities
  • Recycling over one million tonnes of waste materials

The CCS is an industry-wide initiative designed to improve the image of construction and ensure sites operate responsibly within their local communities. Projects are independently assessed against a strict set of criteria covering community engagement, environmental performance, workforce wellbeing, safety and site management.

The latest recognition builds on the project’s previous CCS success, with the scheme also receiving bronze awards in earlier years. In addition, contractor Galliford Try has achieved eight perfect CCS scores since 2021.

Sam Edwards, head of highways infrastructure, said: “The Considerate Constructors Scheme sets a very high benchmark across the construction industry, so receiving a Gold Award at national level is a fantastic accomplishment.

“This recognition reflects years of hard work and dedication from everyone involved in the project, as well as the strong partnership approach that has been taken throughout delivery of the scheme.

“The project’s previous perfect CCS scores and bronze awards already demonstrated the quality of the work taking place on site, and this latest award further reinforces that the Grantham Southern Relief Road is being delivered to an exceptional standard.

“This is a huge achievement that underlines Lincolnshire County Council’s commitment to maintaining the highest of standards on major road schemes, while ensuring that all our construction site leave a positive and lasting legacy for local communities.”

When complete, the 3.5km relief road will improve journey times and provide Grantham with a reduction in congestion, disruption and delays. It will also create a safer, more attractive and accessible town centre; enable economic growth by providing access to development land; and help reduce carbon emissions and noise pollution within the town.
