Grantham pubs the target of German bombs

June 16, 2020 by Grantham Matters Leave a Comment

Yesterday we published a picture of the Manners Arms, London, Road, in early 1940. These picture were taken later that year.

Taken on about 30th Septermber 1940. Nothing to do with the railway, in fact it was on target to hit Ruston & Hornsby’s factory (where the Fina filling station is now). It made bren gun carriers among other things. The Joiners Arms, Parkers Shop and Hubbard’s Garage (approx Kennelgate) were also destroyed There were four bombs, the final one hitting the Manners Arms garage. Seven people were killed in the raid and 16 injured. The ARP wardens (‘put that light out’) were late turning out as they were holding a meeting at the Guildhall. From Barry Ladds, Barrowby
Another view of Manners Arms yard, showing the destroyed petrol station and damage shops across the road including the Spotted Cow (far left)
Ruston & Hornsby (now site of filling station, London Road) following the same raid.
