Grantham MP Gareth Davies says…
I warmly welcome Rishi Sunak as leader of the Conservative Party and our country’s Prime Minister.
Rishi has a strong record on the economy. As a member of the Treasury Select Committee, I have seen first hand Rishi’s command of the detail and his determination to tackle head-on the most difficult economic challenges arising from Coronavirus and its aftermath. His furlough scheme supported over 11 million jobs during the pandemic and, before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine produced a global energy prices shock, Rishi oversaw a strong post-pandemic recovery. The UK’s GDP grew by 7.4% last year – the highest in the G7. Now, as then, he will bring clarity and compassion to ensuring economic stability and support in testing times.
In international affairs, Rishi demonstrated great foresight and strategic thought when in 2017 he highlighted the security risk to our undersea infrastructure, a threat which the Chief of the Defence Staff reiterated earlier this year. He brokered a ground-breaking international agreement at the G20 on corporate taxation and also co-ordinated the harsh economic sanctions imposed on Putin’s regime, which the IMF predicts will cause Russia’s GDP to contract by 8.5% this year. He provided £16 billion in extra defence spending during this Parliament and has committed to continue to provide the funding needed to respond to evolving threats.
The Prime Minister has my full support. I am confident in his ability, and stand ready to help him in delivering results for the people of Grantham and Stamford and the whole country. It is vital that we now unite and govern in the national interest.
