The Nottingham’s local leader for South Nottinghamshire is getting set to run 13 miles in memory of his partner’s father who sadly died after a short but determined battle with lung cancer.
Martin Wright, who oversees the building society’s Grantham, Newark, Beeston, Long Eaton, West Bridgford, Wollaton and Stapleford branches, is preparing for the Robin Hood Half Marathon which takes place in Nottingham on 26 September.
By his own admission Martin has never run anywhere near the distance before, however his motivation to succeed – and what is pulling him through all the arduous training sessions – comes from partner Clare’s late dad John and the excellent care he received after falling ill.
It’s also why all sponsorship money Martin raises will go to Sue Ryder, the hospice charity whose caring team looked after John so compassionately during the final days before he passed away in December 2020.
Martin, 49, takes up the tale: “After a short illness John was admitted to a hospice and they cared for him and the family brilliantly. It was a very sad time, but the amazing later-life care they gave at a time of deep emotions and anxiety was truly inspirational.
“The hospice rely so much on public donations so to recognise the amazing care I thought of doing something outside my comfort zone to see how much I can raise. I decided to take part in the Robin Hood Half Marathon and embarked on a four-month training programme.
“I’ve never run that far before, but now I’m well into the preparations I’m really looking forward to it. I know it will be tough but I’ll be spurred on by happy memories of John and raising as much money as possible to say thank-you for the wonderful care he received.”
Anyone wanting to sponsor Martin – who has already set his sights on possibly running a full marathon later in 2021 – can do so by visiting this link.
The Nottingham has also donated £50 to the cause as part of its commitment to matching any fundraising which any of its team members participate in, up to that amount.
