Well known Grantham figure and nationally respected goldsmith and silversmith, John Cussell, is retiring from his retail business after 40 years.
“It’s been a joy working in the town and serving the people of Grantham, and further afield”, says John, who first opened a workshop on Westgate in 1975. His well-known double-fronted shop has been an important feature of the town and many readers will have bought jewellery or had commissions and engagement rings made by John, something which he is particularly proud of.
Over the years, John Cussell has trained and employed sales-staff to become experts in gold and silver retail. And it’s been a family business. His wife and his co-partner Jenni, although a school teacher for many years has always had an essential role in the business, and as they grew up, their daughters Amy and Chloe, too.
It isn’t an easy task finally bringing your life’s work and something you’ve loved to an end, so John plans to close his shop in style with celebrations and a sale of jewellery throughout July.
However, Master goldsmith/silversmith and Freeman of the City of London, John won’t be putting down his hammer just yet, as he plans to continue by concentrating on his love of silversmithing and creating bespoke commissions.
Among his past commissions are The Ascot King George VI Diamond Stakes and Queen Elizabeth Cup presented by HRH Queen Elizabeth. Lincoln Cathedral Goblet, designer and maker of the Harlaxton Ceremonial Mace together with work for The Woodland Trust; Amnesty International; Saab Cars UK, The Submariners’ Association; St Wulframs Church and The Royal Yacht Squadron, Cowes.
