WALTON Girls High School celebrates its 60th anniversary next year.
Originally the Girls Central School, the old school in Castlegate, dating from the 1920s just didn’t come up to scratch.
Work began in 1964 in a field off Kitty Briggs Lane and two years later the four-storey structure was open.
The 300 girls were delighted with their new light and airy premises.
The Girls’ Central was dark with outside toilets across the playground from the main building.
Visitors wanting to see the headmistress had to go through a classroom to her office.
Shirley Hind, one of three Girls Central pupils who became teachers at Walton Girls, said: “It was wonderful when we came here.”
The old school only had two head teachers in its history, Miss Jabet and Miss Nina Hewitt.
