Grantham club celebrates 50th anniversary

November 22, 2024 by Grantham Matters Leave a Comment

Grantham Life Saving Club (GLSC) is celebrating a golden anniversary, marking over 50 years of dedicated service to the community. Founded in 1971 by a group of passionate volunteers, the club has trained hundreds of individuals in vital life-saving skills.

A special awards ceremony was held at Meres Leisure Centre to honour the club’s achievements and recognise the efforts of its members and volunteers. Barbara Rowlandson, a long-standing member, received the Brian Hubbard Dedication Award for her outstanding contributions. Brian along with fellow volunteer Mel Fulcher are dedicated club supporters and lifelong members of RLSS still to this day.

GLSC offers weekly RLSS approved training sessions for both Rookies and National Life Saving Academy students, covering essential skills like CPR, lifesaving swimming techniques, and poolside rescues. The club’s family-friendly atmosphere provides a supportive environment for young people to learn valuable life skills while having fun.

Beyond training, GLSC plays a crucial role in the community by providing pool lifeguards for local facilities and participating in community events. The club’s resilience has been tested, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the unwavering commitment of its volunteers has ensured its continued success, meaning it is the last remaining Life Saving Club in the whole of Lincolnshire.

With a recent influx of new volunteers and a generous grant from the Grantham Rotary Club Swimarathon, GLSC is poised to expand its reach and impact.
