GRANTHAM businesses are urged to take part in a national workplace fitness initiative called Workplace Challenge, which starts next month.

From January 5,  a free eight-week activity challenge will be launching across the county and will see workplaces and employees sign up to lead a more active lifestyle and maintain a healthier workforce.

Colleagues and workplaces will be able to compete against others in this one-of-a-kind initiative by battling it out to win points for their organisation by taking part in sport and physical activity.

The company with the highest number of points earned will clinch Lincolnshire Sport’s title of the sportiest workplace in Lincolnshire and in partnership with Center Parcs Conference and Events, be awarded a day trip to Sherwood Forest Center Parcs for up to 20 people.

The eight week challenge, which is ran by Lincolnshire Sport, is an online social tool which measures the amount of activity completed through leaderboards.

Once registered, businesses and individuals will be able to see the progress they make in CO2 emissions saved, weight lost and the amount of activity hours logged.

The log records levels of sport, physical activity and active travel, allowing users to create their own personal group of friends to motivate, encourage and compete against others.

Workplaces and employees can register online atwww.workplacechallenge.org.uk/lincolnshire.

More than 60 prizes, including daily spot prizes, will be awarded not only to winners, but those who take part purely to lead a healthier lifestyle. The prizes range from cinema tickets, to beauty hampers, to cycle packs, to hirebike hours and even to brand new bikes.

There are more than 200 county businesses involved in the challenge who are aiming to generate improvements in workforce health, reduce absenteeism due to sickness and create some healthy in house competition.

Physical Activity Project Officer at Lincolnshire Sport, Amy Story, said: “East Midlands is still rated one the worst places for obesity related hospital admissions and Lincolnshire has some of the poorest health levels in the country.

“We know the importance of getting people more active, so we hope that workplaces from across Lincolnshire will join us in our mission to encourage healthy lifestyles.

“Not only does Workplace Challenge help to get people active in the workplace, it creates a great sense of team work and camaraderie within the office.

“It’s not just about winning and losing, it’s about getting everyone more active.

“We hope people can use this new initiative as a fun, new and different New Year’s resolution, and this time get rewarded for their hard work.”
