Four weeks to go until polling day: Are you registered to vote?

April 4, 2024 by Grantham Matters Leave a Comment

With just four weeks to go until elections for the Lincolnshire Police and Crime Commissioner and a new parish council in Grantham, residents are being urged to check they are registered to vote in order to have their say on polling day.

Those already registered will soon receive a polling card with details of their designated polling station, which will be open from 7am to 10pm.

Residents must be on the electoral register to be able to vote on Thursday 2nd May.

Karen Bradford, Chief Executive and Returning Officer for the District, said: “The majority of residents in South Kesteven are registered to vote but there are still those who have yet to do so.

“This might include those who have recently moved to a new address or young adults who have just turned 18.

“I would encourage anyone not yet registered to go online before the deadline to secure their opportunity to take part in this important vote to establish a new council for Grantham, and also choose a Police and Crime Commissioner for Lincolnshire.”

To take part in the elections, residents need to be registered to vote by midnight on Tuesday 16 April. Anyone in doubt of whether they are on the register can check with SKDC by email to elections@southkesteven.gov.uk or by phone on 01476 406080.

It takes just five minutes to apply online at gov.uk/register-to-vote. The website asks for date of birth and National Insurance number in addition to the usual details of name, address, previous address and nationality.

Anyone wishing to vote by post for either election needs to apply online at www.gov.uk/apply-postal-vote This must be done by 5pm on April 17th to get a postal vote for the May 2nd elections.

Voters should also remember that they will need to bring photo ID to the polling station to be able to vote. A list of accepted forms of ID is available on the Electoral Commission’s website www.electoralcommission.org.uk/voterid.

Those that do not have eligible ID can apply for free voter ID, through the same website. To apply for the free ID, known as a Voter Authority Certificate, voters will need to provide a photo, full name, date of birth, the address at which they are registered to vote and their National Insurance number.

SKDC is also urging those that are voting by proxy or postal vote to check the changes to how they vote, all information about the upcoming elections can be found here: www.southkesteven.gov.uk/elections
