Labour councillor Charmaine Morgan has contacted Mayor of Grantham and Chief Executive Adrian Rave with concerns about public safety at Welham Street multi-storey car park.
She said:
“Further to discussion with Aidan Rave I am writing to raise formerly concerns regarding security and safety at Welham Street Car Park. The car park is on the edge of my ward and used by residents and visitors alike.
I have received complaints regarding the following:-
A. Drug dealing in the stairwell
B. Youths sitting on the high ledges shouting abuse at members of the public below.
C. Youths skateboarding in the car park
D. This Sunday three Youths aged 12-14 years threw a large chunk of flooring material/concrete off the roof only missing a Harrowby Rd resident by inches. He would have been killed or seriously injured had this not narrowly missed him the lump was so large.
It was thrown so hard and far it reached him when he was walking the other side of Welham Street next to the flats. He gave chase but could not catch them. He was clearly upset/shaken by the incident.
“I have discussed the security of this site before with SKDC officers.
“I called for building works to improve the car park making it impossible for someone to sit on the ledges at every level through the use of meh/glass/metal barriers and improved security measures in the stairwell.
“Instead officers cut down valuable street scene trees rather than properly tackle the ASB issues on site when youths were also using them to climb off the building to reach the ground.
“Please advise how many security guards patrol skdcs premises, including the car park at night now? Please confirm two officers are working together as I have previously requested.
“I understand a meeting is taking place to discuss these issues. We are spending £millions upgrading the town cinema. If we want visitors to have a safe enjoyable experience more must be done.
“I expect the residents in the flats and houses near the car park are also affected by these issues.”
