Grantham Civic Society (GCS) is behind the archaeological dig on St Peter’s Hill this week.
There are three trenches.
The archaeology report will take a few weeks to process the information and finds.
The first trench at the north revealed an 11th-13th century cobbled floor with demolition rubble on top, maybe St Peter’s Chapel. The chapel was bult by the Greyfriars, whose Priory was near what is now Union Street.
The second trench, which was much deeper was 17th century at the base and only revealed pottery and animal bones.
The third most southerly trench, again of 17th century date and also much deeper, revealed a stone post of reused stone.
GCS secretary Ruth Crook (who also took the photos) said: “This may have been the entrance to a well house, which we picked up on resistivity.
“We couldn’t dig over the well house, as there were too many power cables.”
