Ex-service members of the armed forces have joined the teaching line-up as Grantham College’s Engineering department gears up for the new academic year.
Phillip Evans, who served as a weapons technician, and Mark Spence, a former avionics technician, have joined the college over the summer.
The pair served for more than 50 years between them in the RAF.
They are welcomed by a department including Alex Knowles, a former RAF mechanical engineer and the first ex-serviceman to graduate from the Further Forces programme.
Alex joined the college in August 2018 and recently gained his PGCE from Nottingham Trent University, which he obtained while teaching at Grantham College.
Both Phillip and Mark have previous experience of teaching throughout their careers in the RAF.
Each of the former RAF trio possess specialist skills in each area of a fighter jet: Alex with mechanics, Mark with electronics and Phillip with weaponry.
Phillip, who has also worked as an assessor in his career, explained: “When I worked on 29th squadron, I taught aircraft servicing.”
Mark added: “I used to teach maintenance on the Harrier, which gave me the incentive to look for a teaching job.”
The pair are both eager to start teaching and assessing in September and are looking forward to working at Grantham College.
Mark said: “On my initial visit, the college felt a pleasant and professional environment to work in.”
Grantham College would like to welcome our new recruits, and we look forward to them bringing their valuable experience to our Engineering department. The college is glad that the great skills and knowledge that the new staff members hold can be shared and put to good use even after their RAF careers.
If you’d like to be taught by our knowledgeable ex-servicemen, sign up to an Engineering course today by visiting our website or pop along to our next open event on September 19th at 5-8pm.
