Alfred Ebbutt (1891-1981)
BORN in Witchford, Cambridgeshire, Alfred Norris Ebbutt was only a few months old when his family moved to Caythorpe.
After leaving school he took an apprenticeship with Hornsby ‘s and was an engineer when he became one of the first locally to volunteer for service in the First World War.
He was a member of 203rd Field Company of the Royal Engineers and fought in the Battle of the Somme.
On demob, he began a cycle repair business in the Hare and Hounds Yard, Fulbeck.
His grew into a car agency and repair business with petrol sold in two-gallon cans, before the advent of petrol pumps.
He married Mabel Payne in 1926 and five years later they bought Foston Tollbar and developed it into a filling station and tea bar.
In the Second World War he was a sergeant in the Foston Home Guard unit.
He retired first to Buckingham then to the Marlborough area, Wiltshire.
