As the weather hots up, firefighters in Lincolnshire are dealing with a range of incidents that could have been prevented.
This included incidents over the weekend where fires occurred from weed burners and flame throwers.
Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue attended a garden on fire near Louth, where a petrol can that had been used for weed-burning, exploded.
The resident suffered burns to their legs from this. In another incident, an improvised flame thrower was used in a house in Lincoln to try and get rid of a wasps nest.
People with concerns about wasps nests should always seek professional advice from pest controllers, and never use aerosols in this way.
Karen Gardner, Community Fire Safety Manager at Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, said: “In hot dry weather, any kind of naked flames can easily spread. Weedburners should be used with extreme caution anyway, but please don’t try and make your own, and we’d advise not to use them around dry grass in the current conditions.
“This also applies to barbeques and cigarettes – please make sure they’re fully extinguished and bear in mind how dry the ground can be. In the last few years we’ve seen large-scale wildfires in the UK during similar dry conditions.”
Other advice from Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue includes:·
Avoid leaving glass bottles around outside – they can magnify the sun’s rays and cause fires.·
Make sure barbeques are sited in appropriate places and entirely cool before you dispose of them.

Don’t be tempted to go in rivers and lakes unless you’re an open water swimmer, they can be deeper and colder than you expect, posing serious risk to life.
