Holidays should be a time to relax and unwind, a chance to take some time off work and spend time with family and friends. But domestic abuse doesn’t take a holiday, and here in Lincolnshire it will not be tolerated.

Our new campaign highlights the fact that for those people enduring domestic abuse help and support is available. We want to make clear that no one has to put up with it, and seeking advice and information can be the first step towards a new start.

During the holiday periods large numbers of holiday makers, day trippers and seasonal workers travel into East Lindsey, Boston Borough, and South Holland. August is a high month for reporting domestic abuse incidents in these areas, with the holiday season running all year. Each year, we receive over 10,000 incidents of domestic abuse in Lincolnshire.

Chief Superintendent Chris Davison said:

“The pressure a holiday period can place on families is something that we must consider; more time spent together, possible financial concerns or stress can increase pressure on any family unit.  For those in unhealthy, abusive relationships it can be a time where violence, abuse and controlling behaviour increases.

“We want to ensure those coming into the county know that Lincolnshire Police will support them throughout. This means we will robustly investigate all reports of domestic abuse, and provide support and advice to victims and their families should they be placed in a position where they need to contact us.”

Because of the large numbers of visitors to the East of the county during the summer months, boards highlighting the campaign have been put up across East Lindsey, with the support of East Lindsey and Coast Community Beat Inspector Matthew Bennison. Leaflets are being distributed to caravan site owners across the district to highlight the issue of domestic abuse. These will make clear what will happen when owners call Lincolnshire Police should domestic abuse be occurring on their site amongst their residents, or should they have individuals arrive who are fleeing their abusive partner and looking for a place of safety.

Chief Superintendent Davison added: “Residents of Lincolnshire should have the confidence to believe they will be supported and protected throughout the reporting process and any subsequent court process. “For anyone just visiting Lincolnshire, we want them to also be confident that we will refer them on to the police force in the area where they usually live.”
