Perfectly ordinary looking older gents from the early 1960s. Old Contemptibles. Men who went to France in 1914 as part of the British Expeditionary Force of the regular army. So small was the BEF by European standards that the Kaiser was reputed to have said that his men would walk all over that, ‘Contemptible little army.’ Well, history records otherwise and what stories those ordinary looking gents could have told.
Couldn’t agree more Mike. By 1961 most of these men would have been in their late 60’s or 70’s. Although I can’t identify him I’m sure one of them will be Fred Dixon who lived on New Beacon Road (coincidentally in a bungalow that was probably originally from Belton camp). Through the 1970/80’s the local branch of Old Contemptible used to continue to hold meetings and it was sad to see year on year numbers reducing and names disappearing off list. Such brave men we owe them so much.
