Deputy Mayor makes her first formal visits

June 7, 2023 by Grantham Matters Leave a Comment

Deputy Mayor Charmaine Morgan was delighted to join funeral director Robert Holland and his enthusiastic volunteers at Ropsley Heath Light Railway as her first engagement on Saturday (31 May) in her new role. She attended with my husband John Morgan acting as consort.

It was a beautiful day. The miniature diesel and steam  trains, Ropsley Heath station and track were amazing with attention given to every detail. It was also a pleasure to meet the talented local crafters and other stall holders raising funds.

The railway is open to the public on Saturdays over the summer with opportunities for local groups to fund raise.

One of the events being organised is to support the Army Benevolent Fund. For details please see the website:

Her second engagement was at St Johns Church, Grantham which was hosted by Father Clay Roundtree and his wife Frances, along with other volunteers. The church proved a wonderful venue for a stunning brass performance by the Harlaxton College students, lecturers and visiting students from the USA. St Johns is opening its doors to our community 10 – 12 offering coffee and a chat and other support nearly every morning except Sunday.

Coun Morgan said: “My thanks to everyone involved. It was so uplifting to meet such wonderful talented people and those working behind the scenes keeping everything going at both events. It was also encouraging to receive such positive feedback from our USA visitors enchanted with Grantham and surrounding rural countryside.

“I am honoured to have been voted as Grantham’s new Deputy Mayor and delighted to be working closely with Mayor Cllr Mark Whittington as we do our best to promote our town and the role of the Mayor and Mayors Parlour this year.

“The District election has brought new changes in SKDC. I was honoured to be re-elected for a fourth term and delighted to be the Grantham representative of the Democratic Independent Group of councillors who have members from across the entire District.

“We are part of the Independent Alliance now running SKDC with Lib Dem, Green and Labour Party Councillors. The Democratic Independent Group also includes the current leader of the Council Cllr Richard Cleaver.”

I will be continuing to work with Grantham Independent councillors as well as we support each other for our town and was dighted to have had their support when I was nominated for Deputy Mayor.

Within the parlour and within SKDC we are putting politics aside when possible to work together for our community. If the Mayor Cllr Mark Whittington or I can support any local groups please let us know.

As a gentle reminder there are still funds available this year and next via SKDC and the UKSPF committee. If any community group wish to apply I will be happy to assist. Just email me: charmaine.morgan@southkesten.gov.uk or call mob 07398 156296.
