Photo:SKDC – Eight members of South Kesteven District Council’s Street Scene squad are tackling the 15K Tough Mudder fund-raising event at Belvoir Castle on Sunday 5th July.

Five of the team are ex-forces, and since January the whole team has all been on a special training programme organised by former Army fitness instructor and now Street Scene chargehand, Owen Ison.

Street Scene Manager and military veteran, Cameron Greene, said: “We have a lot of ex-military working for Street Scene and this is a charity that’s close to our hearts.

“The Tough Mudder at Belvoir seemed a great opportunity to support Help for Heroes. and we want to raise as much money as possible in support of other military veterans.”

Running has improved the team’s overall fitness, while gym sessions are providing the upper and lower body strength needed to tackle the 20 course obstacles, including cage crawling, scaling heights and hidden underwater hazards.

With an estimate of two and a half hours to complete the gruelling course, they have also had heat injury training in case of a hot day.

Cllr Phil Dilks, SKDC Cabinet Member for Armed Forces said; “I am really proud to see our staff going the extra mile to raise money for such a worthy charity.

“As a council we are committed to support all elements of the defence community, and the work that Help for Heroes does for veterans and their families is just amazing.”

Help for Heroes Veterans Clinical Adviser Helen Sirrell said; “We are very grateful to the Street Scene team, who are raising vital funds for Help for Heroes and increasing awareness of what we do to support veterans and their families in the local area. We know that Lincolnshire has a high population of Armed Forces Veterans.

“As a veteran myself, I recognise the difficulties faced by some when leaving service. Help for Heroes is here to support all veterans and their families to live well after service. We encourage all veterans who are struggling to reach out for support.”

The council team consists of Owen Ison, Cameron Greene, Mark Jones, Mark Smith, Anthony Coe, Daniel Barker, Matthew Sumner and Dean Foister.
