Benjamin Coultas (1858-1930)
GRANTHAM born Benjamin Coultas was the grandson of James Coultas, who founded the Perseverance Ironworks in Union Street.
He worked for his father, also James, in the family business until 1890 when he went into partnership with his brother as timber merchants and ironmongery (later Chandlers).
After retiring, he became managing director of the Grantham Journal until 1927 when he a seizure from which he never recovered, save for an occasional outing in a bath chair.
For 20 years he was in public service, co-opted on to the town council during the First World War and continuing to serve afterward.
He was a magistrate, a commissioner for sewers and a commissioner for Income Tax.
He was a governor for King’s School, KGGS and national School as well as being a dedicate churchman.
