A wreath laying at a prestigious American Memorial Day ceremony was one of the first official duties for South Kesteven District Council’s new chairman, Cllr Jacky Smith.
Cllr Smith delivered a floral tribute to the United States Army Air Force lX Troop Carrier Command, active in the district during WWll.
The ceremony, on Bank Holiday Monday at the Cambridge American Ceremony, was attended by the American ambassador, the Honourable Robert Wood Johnson, and high-ranking military personnel from America and Britain.
The wreath laying was carried out on behalf of InvestSK, SKDC’s economic growth and regeneration company, which includes aviation heritage in its cultural and heritage activities.
Depicting Troop Carrier Command’s arm badge, the wreath, created by Sue Hodgson at Flowers from Holland, included eryngium trimmed and sprayed blue, white spray roses, sprayed double chrysanthemums, hypericum berries, gypsophelia and a spray carnation.
Cllr Smith said; “It was an absolute honour to not only be at the ceremony in a year when we are commemorating D-Day and the role our allies played, but to pay specific tribute to those American personnel who served here and helped turn the tide of the war.
“It was clear from conversations that current American military personnel value very highly the role and sacrifices of Troop Carrier Command.”
