Harry Coldron (1920-1954)
HARRY Coldron was born in Grantham and was a pupil at the Boys National School.
He joined Aveling-Barford, until joining the Navy in March 1939. When war broke out later that year he was drafted overseas, engaged in submarine chasing and convoy worK
He attained the rank of petty officer stoker mechanic, and on demob started work at Ruston & Hornsby and was a member of the works fire brigade, before returning to Aveling-Barford.
A keen boxer, he was a member of Ruston & Hornsby’s Amateur Boxing Club, being also secretary as well as an ABA referee.
He started the Grantham School of Boxing, of which he was the secretary from its inception in 1952. He was a member of the Midland Counties A. and also of the Referees” and Judges’ Association, and founder of Grantham School of Amateur Boxing.
He was also a founder member of Grantham Hockey Club and an energetic committeeman.
Mr Coldron was also a special constable.
When he was six years old, young Harry was running across the road at Hill Foot, when was knocked down a motorcycle combination. After he had been conveyed home, it was ascertained that bones were broken, and he was badly bruised.
Some 28 years later, he was involved in a collision with a car while motorcycling in Houghton Road and died the following day.
