All three of Grantham’s SKDC-managed parks have secured the right to display the prestigious Green Flag for another year.
The Green Flag Award is the benchmark international standard for publicly accessible parks and green spaces.
Wyndham Park, Queen Elizabeth Park and Dysart Park in Grantham are all owned and managed by South Kesteven District Council – and each one has individually wowed assessors thanks to the hard work put in by council staff and volunteer groups.
Wyndham Park will be flying the flag that signals it’s one of the best in the country for the 15th year in a row, also retaining its Green Heritage Site Accreditation, supported by Historic England, for the management and promotion of its historic features. It is one of only 11 parks across the East Midlands to hold the Heritage award.
Queen Elizabeth Park is receiving its sixth award in a row and Dysart Park its fourth consecutive accolade.
Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Cllr Paul Stokes, who is also Deputy Council Leader, said: “Residents and visitors love to visit our parks to socialise, to enjoy nature and to play safely.
“People of all ages also take advantage of the multitude of opportunities to improve their physical wellbeing and mental health.
“It’s all down to our amazing staff who set out a management plan for the infrastructure and natural environment – alongside our volunteers who generously give their time – working tirelessly together to keep up these high standards we come to expect.
“Everyone involved should feel extremely proud of their Green Flag achievement.”
The awards confirm the parks as welcoming, healthy, safe and secure. They are well-maintained and clean. They attract local community involvement. The way they are managed is seen to have a positive impact on the environment – and there is strong management and conservation of natural features, wildlife and flora, landscape features, and the buildings, park structures and facilities.
Wyndham Park (NG31 9BB) is a memorial park, created in 1924 and renamed in honour of Lt Hon William Reginald Wyndham, 1st Life Guards, who was killed in action in 1914. Facilities include tennis courts, children’s splash pool, skate park, accessible toilets, model boating, sensory garden, table tennis, an urban gym, visitor centre and riverside walk and environmental improvements through the Witham/Slea Blue Green Corridor project.
Dysart Park (NG31 6JD) occupies land left to the people of Grantham in the will of Sir Lionel Williams John Manners, the late Earl of Dysart. It offers a multi-use games court, bandstand, wildflower meadow, tennis courts and a children’s play area.
The land for Queen Elizabeth Park (NG31 8FJ) was purchased by SKDC in 1979 and is named after HM Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother to mark her 80th birthday. Facilities include adventure play, cycle path, fishing, conservation areas, wetland ponds and riverside walks.
