Campaign promotes participation in local democracy

October 16, 2024 by Grantham Matters Leave a Comment

South Kesteven District Council is supporting an annual campaign to boost local democracy and encourage resident participation.

European Local Democracy Week takes place this week – 14 to 20 October 2024 – as a tribute to the signing of the European Charter of Local Self-Government. It was the first legally binding instrument to safeguard the rights of local and regional authorities.

Cllr Philip Knowles, Cabinet Member for Corporate Governance and Licensing, said: “We’re proud to support this annual event to recognise the role of local democracy within our communities and to encourage residents to get involved.

“Working with residents to shape and improve the services that matter to them is really important and we continue to hold regular consultations and offer opportunities to provide feedback.”

Since 2023, the Council has also invited young people to join a South Kesteven Youth Council to help shape their local area.

A steering group made up of representatives from schools in Grantham decided on three key priorities: mental health, the environment and entrepreneurship.

They also agreed how the Youth Council will operate going forwards before recruiting more members.

Cllr Rhea Rayside, Cabinet Member for People and Communities, said: “The SK Youth Council has collectively decided on its priorities and has been working hard to help action positive change.

“It is fantastic to see such a passionate cohort of young people all ready to get stuck into local government. The voices of our future generations are really valuable and I am pleased that the Youth Council continues to provide a platform for us to amplify them.”

In-person meetings held every two months in the Council Chamber in Grantham gives the young councillors the chance to share their views and work together to shape their local area.

They’ll also help to consult on policy by reviewing reports and talking to policy makers.

As well as actively participating in local government issues and decision-making processes, they’ll get the chance to meet and collaborate with peers from across South Kesteven and gain valuable transferrable skills.

The SK Youth Council continues to accept applications from those aged between 13 and 19 years old who live or go to school in South Kesteven.
