George Burton (1855-1921)
GEORGE Richmond Burton was born at Bingham, but lived in Grantham for most of his life, including many years at Church Trees where his business was.
He came to Grantham in around 1880 and set up business as an ironmonger.
But it was as a local pioneer in the motor trade is will be remembered.
Once the Motor Car Act 1903 came in, he entered the motor industry, into which gradually absorbed the ironmongery business.
His son joined him the same year, and for long time, under the name Burton and Son they carried on extensive motor trade their spacious works Church Trees.
Mr. Burton had one of the first cars “for hire” and was one of the first to sell cars in town.
On coming to Grantham he became a member of St Wulfram’s Church and a member of-the choir, having done similar service Bingham.
After 27 years as a chorister, he became assistant to verger, G W Wilkinson.
He’ did considerable work for the church. As a tradesman he converted the whole gas burners into the incandescent method of lighting. Much of the ironwork of the stained glass window was the outcome his skill.
He was a member the Chamber of Trade, and a director, for some years, of Grantham Permanent Building Society.
