Archie Burgon (1912-1994)
NOTTINGHAM- born, Frederick Archibald Burgon played at Colwick, Burton Joyce, Nottingham Forest and Newark Town, before joining Grantham in 1932.
There is little information on his first spell at Grantham, other than his initial goal for the club in the Midland League match against Bradford Park Avenue Reserves in January 1932.
Archie was transferred from Grantham to Notts County at the end of that campaign, but returned to London Road for the start of the 1934/35 season.
He played in probably the high-light of the era, the 13-0 FA Cup victory against Rufford Colliery, scoring four goals himself, and from then on missed only two more matches before his final
game for Grantham in December 1934 with the visit of Mexborough Athletic.
Within days he had left to play for Tottenham Hotspur, but it was a short career at White Hart Lane as after only four appearances he moved to Wrexham and then Carlisle, although this last
transfer came only two weeks before the outbreak of the Second World War.
Archie finished his career with 43 goals in his 172 Football League appearances and notched up another six strikes in 15 Cup ties during that time.
After the end of hostilities he ran pubs in Nottingham and the Star & Garter at Metheringham, near Sleaford, before working as a Highways Inspector until retirement.
A leather football signed by the 1934 Spurs team as part of the transfer deal, hung in Grantham FC’s London Road boardroom for more than half a century.
