Mike Bosnell (1932 – 2013)
LINCOLN-born Mike Bosnell was a popular player with the London Road fans.
The former Lincoln City Reserves striker, who after breaking his leg returned to the game with Holbeach United, signed for The Gingerbreads.
He first played for Grantham in the November 1954 Midland League game at London Road against Scunthorpe & Lindsey United Reserves, scoring a brace on his debut.
Mike missed only one of the remaining games from that season, amassing 38 goals to his credit, with the help of six hat-tricks, making him the natural successor to Jack Macartney’s position.
The following year his scoring skills were even better, with another 53 strikes to his name, including five during the February 1956 game against Goole Town.
But in the next two years, Mike only played in about half of the season’s games, although in that time he scored another 27 goals, including one further hat-trick against Wisbech Town.
Mike returned to London Road in February 1960, scoring five goals past Stamford in his first match, and played in all but one of the remaining games of the season.
His final appearance for Grantham came in the Lincolnshire County Cup ‘A’ Final victory over Gainsborough Trinity in April 1961.
He went on to play for Ashby Institute and March Town United, before giving up the game to concentrate on his building business
He died in 2013 while still living in the Lincoln area.
