Three bank holidays during the Christmas and New Year period mean there will be some changes to when domestic waste and recycling will be collected.
SKDC’s hard-working bin crews, who work in all weathers to help households dispose of waste, will enjoy some well-deserved time off on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
Christmas week is when silver bins will be collected. Those due on Monday 23rd December will have their bins emptied on Saturday 21st December. Collections for Tuesday 24th and Wednesday 25th will both take place one day earlier than usual.
Those due on Thursday 26th December and Friday 27th will both take place a day later.
New Year week sees black bins emptied. Houses served on Monday and Tuesday 30th and 31stJanuary will be as normal. There will be no collection on Wednesday 1st January, with collections for the rest of the week taking place one day later, up to and including Saturday 4thJanuary.
Then the week beginning Monday 6th January will be paper and card week using your purple-lid bin, with collections back to normal.

Cabinet Member for Environment and Waste, Cllr Rhys Baker, said: “We realise that households get more packages, and create more waste and recycling, than usual around Christmas.
“While we know our residents like to recycle as much as possible, please remember that not all Christmas cards and wrapping paper can go into the recycling bin.
“Cards with glitter should go in your black bin. If wrapping paper doesn’t have glitter on, give it a ‘scrunch test’ to see if it is recyclable – if the paper won’t stay in a ball when you scrunch it, please pop it in the black bin.
“We have made a list of tricky items that cannot be recycled to help residents put the Right Thing in the Right Bin. Just remember: No Grease, No Grub, No Glitter. If in doubt, check our A-Z recycling pages online at www.southkesteven.gov.uk/rightbin
“If you are picking up a few spare packs of batteries to power Santa’s latest present for your children, remember you can recycle used batteries by leaving them out in a small bag with any bin collection. This is only for batteries, as tablets, phones and other tech are a fire risk for our waste vehicles, so we ask that you don’t put them with your batteries or in your bins.”
Old phones and gadgets can be traded in at a phone store or online, passed on to relatives or taken to the Local Household Waste Recycling Centre.
Cllr Baker added: “Our bin crews do a fantastic job in all weathers year-round. They deserve a break and to spend time with their families at this time of year. We are very grateful for residents’ patience and understanding over the festive period.”

Anyone with a real Christmas tree this year can have it collected free by SKDC. Simply check your bin calendar for the next garden bin collection in your area and leave it next to a paid-for green bin for removal.
Also remember to ensure no food waste ends up in the recycling this Christmas. Turkey carcasses and leftovers should go in the black bin/pink bag.

The following items cannot be recycled in Lincolnshire and must go in the black general waste bin:
- Glittery wrapping paper, glittery/foil cards
- Plastic bags, including carrier bags
- Dirty used foil
- Takeaway containers
Crisp tubes and packets
