A Grantham councillor is to put a motion before SKDC’s full council on Thursday (30th Sept) calling for the town to have its own decision-making body.
Councillor Graham Jeal is proposing: “That the Council approves the commencement of a Community Governance Review in relation to the establishment of a Town Council for Grantham”.
Grantham was ruled by Grantham Borough Council until 1973, when it was abolished by the Local Government Act. Since then, all decisions relating to the town have been decided by SKDC.
It remains the only town in SKDC without its own local body to take control of minor issues such as parks and cemeteries.
Even villages the size of Great Gonerby, Denton and Old Somerby have parish councils, including parts of Grantham which fall under ‘Londonthorpe and Harrowby Without’ parish.
Several attempts to establish a Grantham Town Council in recent years have failed.
