The entire Belton House estate will be closed for around two weeks whilst the mansion itself will be shut off for months as filming takes place at the historic site. The National Trust venue in Grantham is particularly popular with families during the summer holidays, with activities including the summer of sport programme and an adventure playground.
But Belton House staff now say that the full estate will be closed between July 17 and July 21 and then between August 1 and August 6 for filming, whilst the mansion itself will be closed from July 17 until August 19. The attraction’s team says that they are currently unable to say what is being filmed there, but say that they will keep people updated when they can.
And according to facebook posts, it looks as if it could be filming episodes of Dr Who, the popular programme which this year celebrates its 60th anniversary.
Meanwhile, other sources suggest it’s Brigerton.
Informing visitors about the upcoming closure, a Belton House spokesperson said: “Activity like this generates significant income, helping to fund our work and reach new audiences. Thank you in advance for your understanding and support. We recommend checking social media and the website before travelling as dates are subject to change.”
Belton House was built by Sir John Brownlow, a baronet and former Grantham MP, in the 17th century. The estate is sprawled across 1,300 acres of land whilst the house itself is home to a range of historic art collections.
The attraction’s team says that its summer of sport programme will be going ahead as planned, but in response to disappointment from some that the closure would coincide with the summer holidays, a Belton House spokesperson said: “We appreciate that the timing of the closure clashes with school holidays and we’re sorry for any disappointment this causes. We worked closely with the production company to try to avoid any closures during the school holidays, but unfortunately it wasn’t possible.”
Belton House has been used for filming purposes before, having featured in the BBC’s 1995 TV adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice starring Colin Firth as Mr Darcy.
It also featured in Bleak House, Jane Eyre and The Secret Garden TV and film productions
The announcement comes following a meeting on Friday, July 1, between Lincolnshire politicians and tourism representatives to discuss how the county’s various filming locations can be better promoted.
