Alzheimer’s Research UK is calling on the people of Grantham to join the charity’s fundraising efforts and keep dementia research going during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Alzheimer’s Research UK is predicting a fall of up to 45% in charitable income for 2020, putting dementia research at risk. Not only this, but people with dementia are more at risk of experiencing severe effects of COVID-19, and official figures show that a quarter of people who have died with COVID-19 in England and Wales also had dementia. Alzheimer’s Research UK’s mission to bring about the first life-changing treatment for dementia has never been more important.
Naomi Walters, East Midlands Regional Fundraising Officer at Alzheimer’s Research UK said: “Dementia affects a significant proportion of the population – more than half of UK adults know someone with dementia and there are 1,660 people in Grantham and Stamford alone living with the condition.
“Alzheimer’s Research UK estimates it could be facing a potential drop in income due to COVID-19 of up to 45%, and dementia research has been hit hard by the pandemic. Our research shows 95% of dementia researchers have had projects and trials delayed because of the virus, with one in five having had research projects cancelled completely.
“Now more than ever, dementia research needs our backing, which is why we are asking for support from the people of Grantham to join our team and fundraise for dementia research.”
Dementia is caused by physical diseases, most commonly Alzheimer’s disease, and Alzheimer’s Research UK is funding research into all the diseases which cause dementia. In the East Midlands alone, they have funded over £3m of research.
The charity is asking the community of Grantham to join its fundraising efforts. From a car boot sale, sporting challenge, craft sales, a skydive, or your own idea – however you can fundraise, the charity’s friendly fundraising team would love to hear from you.
