| Grantham-based Chantry Dance Company has announcesthat Javier De Frutos is collaborating with them to create a new dance film. They say they are incredibly honoured to have the opportunity to work with this internationally acclaimed director and choreographer. Shocking, sensual, raw, radical – these are words synonymous with De Frutos’ work. Renowned for creating brutal yet beautiful film and stage work, De Frutos has consistently stunned the British dance world with his ability to make work that not only is violently challenging, but also sears the stage with its intelligence and wit. He is one of only three artists in the history of the Olivier Awards to have received nominations in all dance categories and has worked with an abundance of companies and artists all over the world. In July De Frutos commenced work with Chantry Dance on a new small-scale dance film, although as he says – there is no such thing as a ‘small’ project. The film set to Walt Whitman’s evocative poem, ‘Whoever You Are Holding Me Now in Hand’ and is performed by Paul Chantry and Rae Piper, utilising De Frutos’ unique style of verbatim choreography. Although this is the first time De Frutos has worked with Chantry Dance, his relationship with co-Artistic Director Paul Chantry goes back a long way. Chantry has danced for De Frutos in several productions, including the controversial ‘Eternal Damnation to Sancho and Sanchez’ in 2009 and ‘The Most Incredible Thing’ in 2011. Piper said: “I once stated I would cut off my right-arm to work with Javier De Frutos. “Fortunately, such drastic measures haven’t been necessary, but I can say without a shred of hesitation that the dance world needs more work by Javier De Frutos, and Chantry Dance is honoured to collaborate with him.” |
