Hugh Watson (1938-2009)
HUGH Francis Watson was born at Ilkeston, Derbyshire, and attended Ilkeston Grammar School.
He married Doreen at Lincoln in 1962 and they lived at Boston for three years before moving to Grantham. They had one son, Denzil.
Mr Watson completed an apprenticeship with East Midlands Electricity Board in electrical engineering and worked for the company at Lincoln, Boston and Grantham until his retirement.
His hobbies included old books, horology and old cars.
He wrote a book, About Time, on the history of clocks, watches and barometers in Grantham from 1700 until 1900.
Hugh’s interest in clocks began at an early age.
He helped arrange an exhibition of locally made clocks and watches in Grantham Museum which proved very popular.
Retirement led to more time to devote to his hobbies. Recognised as an expert on provincial horological matters this book is the result of many years of research and experience.
He was a member of the Austin 7 Club and a member of the Spalding Gentlemen’s Society.
He lived at Highfield House, Kitty Briggs Lane, Grantham.
