A SHORT service of remembrance and commemoration to honour those who fought and died in the Battle of Britain, was held at the War Memorial in St Wulframs churchyard tonight (Tuesday).
It was organised by the the Grantham branch of the Royal Air Force Association.
This year is the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
As Winston Churchill said ” Never before in the field of human conflict as so much been owed by so many to so few”.
As part of Hitler’s plans to invade Britain (Operation Sealion) he needed air superiority over the skies of Britain.
On this day in 1940, after months of air battles between the Luftwaffe and the aircraft of Royal Air Force Fighter Command, the Luftwaffe High command launched their biggest “do or die” raids on the South Coast to try and finish off the airfields and aircraft of Fighter Command.
Thankfully, thanks to the heroism and bravery of the aircrew and groundcrew of Fighter Command, the Luftwaffe failed.
The defeat by Fighter Command convinced Hitler to postpone and eventually cancel his invasion plans.
