Fred Skerritt (1894-1948)
Born in Oxford Street, he was one of Alfred Skerritt’s nine children, Fred was a pupil at the National School.
He fought in the Army during the First World War, spending most of his time in France.
He became lion-tamer with such famous circuses as Bostock and Wombwell and Bertram Mills and was assisted in the lion’s cage by his wife, Lilian (nee Henson), also of Grantham.
He was then manager at Chapmans menagerie Tottenham Court Road. London before being appointed manager of Butlins holiday camp at Ingoldmels. He also acted as manager Butlin’s Clacton camp
During the close seasons assisted at the menagerie gardens in Glasgow.
He died after a long illness.
