Elsie Davies (1918-1997)
ELSIE Davies was a stalwart Labour councillor with the town, district and county authorities.
She was born in Nantwich, Cheshire, where she met her husband Jack.
The couple moved to Grantham and during the Second World War she worked in the munitions department at Aveling Barford.
She was first elected in 1958 representing St John’s Ward on the old Grantham Borough Council.
Six years later she joined Kesteven County Council until the reorganisation of local government in 1973, when she became a representative on SKDC and LCC.
In 1974, she became Grantham’s first Town Mayor but left SKDC in 1976, rejoining in 1991 representing Harrowby.
She remained a county councillor, serving two years as chairman, although in 1997 declined to stand through ill-health.
