Arnold Graham (1921-2010)
ARNOLD Graham became Grantham’s best know greengrocer after opening his Swinegate business in December 1955, a family business that continued after his death.
Arnold lived in Grantham all his life and met his wife during the war. They married in March 1947 and moved to Castlegate.
Arnold had an active social life playing in the town band and singing in choirs. He also played cribbage, solo and dominoes and drank with his friends in the Blue Pig.
He never minded having his leg-pulled and always gave as good as he got.
Arnold had a variety of jobs before opening the shop including being a taxi driver, a fishmonger and working in a dry cleaners.
One day as a fishmonger cycling through the snow to Easton Hall to Easton Hall to make an early delivery.
Arriving at the servants’ entrance he was told: “Thank you very much… the cat will be pleased.”
He was also regular at St Wulfram’s Church.
The greengrocery business continued to be run by his son David until it closed in 2014.
