SPRINGFIELD Road should be back to normal tomorrow – for now anyhow.
Network Rail is on schedule to finish repairs and improvements to the railway bridge carrying the East Coast Main Line by midnight tonight.
It has permission until midnight to complete the work although is expected to open late this afternoon.
All through traffic from the midlands has been diverted through town since early November as the road east of Stamford Street has been closed.
But it’s not all over.
Three further overnight closures between 7pm and 8am the following morning, have been planned for the following weekends in the New Year:
Saturday 10 January to Sunday 11 January
Saturday 17 January to Sunday 18 January
Saturday 24 January to Sunday 25 January
These closures will enable Network Rail to put the protection beams in place, which must be done after a few weeks to allow the concrete to set.
Justin Page, area director at Network Rail, said: “We’re installing collision protection beams at the railway bridge on Springfield Road to help reduce the disruption caused by vehicle strikes.
“Unfortunately the bridge has been struck numerous times in the past as a result of driver error, which has caused significant delays to train services and often road users.
“In the future these beams will take the brunt of any strike, which will enable us to open the railway line and road more quickly and efficiently.”
