THE apple tree at Woolsthorpe Manor, near Colsterworth, made famous by Sir Isaac Newton near is on the shortlist for Woodland Trust’s Tree of the Year.
The winner of the final top ten will represent England in the 2015 European Tree of the Year contest.
Legend has it that a falling apple from the Flower of Kent tree hit the scientist on the heading, leading him to discovering the laws of gravity.
The other finalists are: Big Bellied Oak, Wiltshire; Allerton Oak, Merseyside; Whiteleaved Oak, Herefordshire; Kett’s Oak, Norfolk; Ankerwycke Yew, Berkshire; Shugborough Yew, Staffordshire; Ickwell Oak, Bedfordshire; Old Knobbley, Essex, and the Major Oak, Nottinghamshire.
