Frequently Asked Questions
What is happening with the adventure playground?
Belton’s much loved outdoor adventure playground is being rejuvenated with exciting new, and bespoke, play equipment. A new train station will also be built along with much requested visitor facilities.
Why are you doing this now?
The original adventure playground opened in 1976 and has been a firm favourite with visitors ever since. However, regular visitors will have noticed that over recent years much of the tree mounted play equipment has been removed. This has been necessary due to the impact the play equipment has had on the trees.
Coupled with the ground compaction resulting from the thousands of visitors enjoying the playground each year, we were concerned that if something isn’t done soon, the playground would have a limited remaining lifespan.
Will you be closing the existing playground during the building works?
Much of the work will take place whilst the playground is closed over winter, and will open over two phases:
Phase 1, which covers the area of the existing playground, will open in March 2015,
Phase 2, which includes the new entrance, further play equipment, train station, toilets and kiosk, will open in May 2015.
What will be different with the updated playground? Will there be new play facilities?
The playground will consist of:
– Two bespoke play structures, one of which includes a tower with internal maze;
– New and restored play equipment;
– Toilets including a disabled toilet and baby change facilities;
– Catering kiosk;
– New train station;
– New entrance via a bridge and boardwalk;
– A slight move of location, in which the playground will move southwards, to open the views of the Gothick Ruin.
How big will it be?
The playground will cover a slightly larger footprint, extending further southwards. This has allowed play equipment to be placed in more appropriate spaces between the trees, and be sited further away from the Gothick Ruin.
Will there be toilets and catering facilities at the playground?
Yes. Toilets are being built, which will include accessible facilities and baby change. There will also be a small kiosk, providing light refreshments.
Will there be play equipment suitable for those with restricted ability?
Yes. Equipment has been included to suit varying abilities. The design of the playground enables children with restricted ability to enjoy more of the equipment and play alongside friends/family. We have also included sensory features in quieter areas too.
