Herbert Pacey (1918- 2004)
HERBERT Pacey had a pretty full life in Grantham, being a headteacher, sportsman and mayor of the town.
Born at Marston, he began as a teacher at Spittlegate School, as senior physical training instructor and gardening master a career interrupted by war service in the Royal Navy.
He was headteacher of Ropsley CE School from 1955 and was appointed headteacher at Huntingtower Road School in 1961 where he remained for 19 years.
He was affectionately known by his pupils as ‘Mr Pastry’.
He was also a prominent member of the National Union of Teachers.
Shortly after his retirement, he was elected Conservative district councillor for Greyfriars Ward from 1983 to 1991, and was Mayor of Grantham in 1989-90.
A cricket enthusiast, he captained Grantham Cricket Club’s Saturday first XI for several seasons.
He was also a member of Grantham Round Table.
