The many winter storms over the winter has not only uplifted a lot of discarded litter but also a huge amount of sand and silt, luckily the constructed berms of recent and past years have done an amazing job to capture this, so much so that the Sedgwick Meadows and Wyndham Park berms have risen in height and are very stable with early signs of vegetation coming through, including flowering Marsh Marigold.
As such while growth was early and low, Grantham Rivercare co-leads David and Ian took the opportunity to clean up a lot of discarded litter caught up.
As well as the usual polystyrene, glass bottles, cans, plastic bottles, soft plastic other noted items such as pregnancy tester, cassette tape, vape, astro turf strip, money box, type writer ribbon to name but a few.
In total four bags were collected from the Witham over a two hour period.
They also collected a number of #vintagelitter items of old cans from the 1980’s and early 1990’s including a rare Plastocan product.
Seriously, what was the thinking behind that Plastocan!?
This has given our teams a great head start for Grantham Rivercare’s 131st group clean-up this month where we are to have over 40 #riverheroes joining together for their adopted stretch of river corridor.
