Edward Neil Hamilton (1936 – 2023)
Neil Hamilton will be remembered as both a solicitor and for cricket in equal measures.
His father, a Grantham lawyer, lived at Riverside, now part of the Grantham College complex. Neil lived there before leaving to be educated at Uppingham College.
He trained in law for five years and qualified in 1959. He was articled with his father’s firm, but he said that his father decided he should work outside Grantham just in case he was “going to make a fool of myself!”.
Neil moved to work in Cambridge before returning to Grantham at the end of 1961.
He became a partner at Norton and Hamilton, St Peter’s Hill, becoming a specialist in all forms of civil litigation, including family law, employment, wills and probate, as well as company law.
On reaching 65, Neil merged his company with Bird & Co, with whom he remained a consultant.
He was married to Sue and the couple had three children.
Outside work, his interests included cricket, playing bridge and growing vegetables.
In his younger days he played cricket for Grantham and was later Chairman.
Her was also chairman of Lincolnshire County Cricket Club from 1988 to 2008. He was then made an Honorary Life Member.
