Gareth Davies MP has joined colleagues representing all UK constituencies to plant a cross of Remembrance in the Constituency Garden of Remembrance in Parliament.
Opened by the Speaker and the Royal British Legion earlier this week, the garden at New Palace Yard provides the opportunity for MPs and representatives from the British Overseas Territories and the Commonwealth to place a tribute on behalf of their communities.
As part of this, the Speaker encouraged MPs to dedicate their poppy to an individual from their constituency who has served our country in uniform.
This year, Gareth has chosen to dedicate his poppy cross to Frederick Collins, who served during the Second World War as part of 45 Commando Royal Marines.
Whilst helping local Royal British Legion volunteers to sell poppies last week, Gareth heard of Mr Collins’s service from his son, Philip. Philip described how his father saw action on Sword Beach on D-Day, going on to fight through France, the Netherlands and into Germany during the liberation of Western Europe.
