Aveling and Porter 10392 “Calcifer” Number 414 was purchased by Eddisons on 22nd September 1922 and with number 415 (another C type) the pair cost Eddisons £1385 according to an Eddison 1948 fleet list.
In 1966 it was was presented by Eddison to Wyndham Park, Grantham.
The eight-ton roller became a popular feature in the play area where children enjoyed clambering over it.
But it was removed following an injury to a child who fell from it. A council spokesman said it was difficult to defend any court action taken by parents and it was removed for scrap.
The restoration project was eventually taken up by Swindon businessman Peter Tye. After an extensive 10 year rebuild she has already made her first steam rally appearance.
Earlier this month she had the new canopy (Awning) fitted.
Peter says
“Manufactured by SJT woodworking, also the new running board and toolbox, also supplied by the above, or “Sam the Mighty” as he’s locally known…
Amazing workmanship from a gentleman and true craftsman.”
He added
“For her 100th Birthday we took her out for a quick run around the block and to show her off to the locals who were suitably impressed.
A nice relaxing day..”
