Simon Terry, (1974 – 2021)
SIMON Terry’s first leap to fame was in 1992, when he returned from the Barcelona with two bronze Olympic medals for archery.
He was the first Britain in 84 years to do so.
The 18-year-old , born in Stirling, Scotland, was given a great welcome by his Osbournby neighbours. But he had a bigger surprise in the post.
It was a letter from the DHSS telling him his unemployment pay had been docked because while overseas he was not ‘available for work.”
Two years later he gave up on the sport but returned in 2004. Within a year he was competing for inclusion in the GB squad. He was sixth in individual recurve at the 2006 European Grand Prix in Italy and eighth in the 2007 Good Luck Beijing test event.
He joined the Olympic squad, this time in Beijing and although seeded seventh, he was beaten by Finland’s Matti Hatava in the round of 64, and the GB team exited the competition at the first round stage.
He is ranked 43rd in the world for individual recurve, the second-highest in the UK.
Although he was part of Team GB at the London Olympics, he failed to gain any medals. He reached the last 32, losing to Dan Oluru in the team event, as Great Britain lost to Ukraine in the last 16.
