Alfie Gibbons (1943-2011)
Grantham Amateurs and St John’s player Alfie made his first team debut for Grantham Town in March 1964 at Long Eaton when Brian Storrow was unavailable.
Alfie kept his place for the rest of the season and finished with 10 goals to his name after only 16 appearances, as Grantham won the Midland League title for the first time in their history.
Grimsby-born Alfie began the following season starting in many of the games, but scored his last goal for the club in the home game against Matlock Town, with his final appearance in the Midland League fixture at Stamford just after the New Year.
Alfie went on to make appearances for Spalding United, Loughborough United, a return to Grantham St John’s, before continuing to play for several local sides.
