Rupert Flowers (1894-1988)
Rupert Flowers was born at Ashridge House, Hertfordshire, where his father was groom and later appointed head coachman to Lord Brownlow.
When the Brownlow family sold Ashridge, the Flowers family came to Lincolnshire – where they had lived on and off over the years and where Rupert’s grandfather Thomas FLOWERS was born.
Rupert became a valet and later a batman during WWI and settled in Grantham as a gentleman’s hairdresser.
He had a salon in the Picture House on St Peter’s Hill and when that closed he moved to Watergate, near the Black Dog, where he ran his business until his death at the age of 94.
When the Journal went to his home in 1982 to interview him and his wife on the occassion of their Golden Wedidng they were told he was at work and they had to make do with his wife alone.
He was also a keen bowler and member of Grantham Bowls Club
