Tuesday 24 September 2019, local Labour Party activist and Secretary of the Grantham Labour Party John Morgan addressed the Labour Party Conference about the problems facing Grantham High Street.
He pointed out the extra problems facing Grantham, where there are many empty shops and charity shops, but a small number of big landowners own the shops and keep the rents high.
He then told the Conference about the proposal to erect a statue of Margaret Thatcher in Grantham, and invited the rest of the Labour movement to attend a demonstration against it, if it happens.
Speaking after the event, John Morgan stated: “The Labour Party is a national Party, so our Conference has Delegates from all over the country. I think it is important to share our experience from Grantham to make sure it gets included in the Labour Party’s policy. After all, we could be in government soon.”
In the afternoon, the Conference was addressed by Labour Leader, Jeremy Corbyn. Speaking afterwards, John Morgan stated: “This was a good speech, about an important issue, namely, how a Labour government would change our society for the better.
“He told us about improving our public services, such as health and education, and abolishing tuition fees and prescription charges, but also about introducing proper rights of work from day one, bringing the utilities back into public ownership, and making the wealthy pay their fair share of tax. He also spoke about the environmental challenges facing our society, and Labour’s pledge to bring down net carbon emissions with a radical plan to create ‘green jobs’. “
Mr Morgan added: “Labour is also the only Party with a sensible plan to sort out Brexit, as Labour is the only Party that will give the people a second referendum with a real choice between Remain or Leaving with a specific actual deal, to break the deadlock.”
He further added: “It is about time we had a government and an economy that serves the people, not the other way around, and I look forward to having a General Election as soon as we have stopped Boris Johnson from bringing a No-Deal Brexit and selling us all out to Donald Trump.”
